New group everybody!
It's the DU Feminists Group.
And it's perfectly safe for all genders, unless you are fond of posting blonde jokes.

1. No thanks!
I lived for 10 years with one, a cultural anthropologist at that. I've been explained, trained, educated, re-programmed, punished and reinforced to the core.

3. Wonderful.
I see you respect feminists as much as our freeper cousins do.
So much for atheist enlightenment.
Charming.

5. I thought this was the one place
on DU where I could post about this new group without being insulted.
I guess I was wrong.
And I am so sorry that I offended you.

9. By your own words you are known
But we're glad you're not going to be joining us until your wounds have healed and you realize that every woman who is fighting for her righs as a human being and a citizen of this country didn't inflict them.

I hope you heal soon.

24. Gee, sounds like simple discussion was never part of that scene
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 12:14 AM by Book Lover
Why not try some regular talk with us in the Feminist Group?

on edit: Nevermind. I just read your second post here. Glad to know you never need to talk about feminism in your life again.

7. For obvious reasons,
feminism goes hand-in-hand with secularism/atheism. A great book showing the relationship between the two is "Women Without Superstition: No Gods, No Masters" (a compilation put together by Annie Gaylor of the Freedom From Religion Foundation). Religious patriarchies HATE strong women, especially now that in the modern era they can't just burn 'em for being witches.

18. There seems to be a connection between feminism and Wicca, though
Or is that a false impression?

I guess I should say that a lot of feminists I've known have been attracted to Wicca and similar recent "Earth-religion" inventions. Which bothers me as an atheist.

20. Interesting observation.
I don't know anything about that except that don't Wicca and Pagan religions view the Earth as a mother figure?
If so, that might appeal to many who are rebelling against the misogynistic mainstream patriarchal religions.

I don't know that much about religion, I was raised in a faith-free
household, praise the pot roast.

Nothing like a good feminist discussion...hell, nothing like a good critical theory discussion--race,class, and gender!

10. Thanks,
If anybody wants to see why it was necessary to form a group (a lot of us had reservations because of the possibility of excluding other members) see this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3810953

There are very few misogynists on DU but all it takes is one to intimidate those who have been abused.
I'm a loudmouth and I don't scare easy but I wanted this for the women who left and those who stayed but said they wouldn't post in the forums.

It is a good thing.

And if anybody thinks I'm going to shut up in the forums now, guess again!

26. I'm with you on this
Misogyny is abhorrent. I think many of my fellow male DUers agree 100% with that statement and consider ourselves as feminists (or pro-feminists depending on one's position regarding the term). Misogyny has no place in a progressive community.

14. Unfortunately, being a feminist means always having to say...
...you don't hate men. I scanned the thread in GD but I've been involved in a lot of flame-fests this week (and it's only Wednesday!) and didn't have the stomach for this one. But your rant was wonderful, amazingly articulate and dead-on.

when you start a positive thread in GD like that one, eh?
It's exactly like the when those imbeciles, the Young Republicans, have their "Straight Pride" parade in Texas.

23. Time to add
that this ex-wife of mine is one of my very few best friends. As far as "feminism", one of the central tenets is that the subject's voice is to be heard. Hence my post, which stated briefly and honestly my own experience, my own voice and no one else's, as a subject, and, secondarily, declined any further personal participation to discussions on "feminism".

25. To each their own...
That's what makes being a Dem so great.

While I don't share your opinion on Feminism, there are a number of topics I am sympathetic to but not passionate enough about to spend much time invovled in discussing, such as firearms.
