Something that bugs the living shit out of me
When people use bible passages to attack the right wing's hypocrisy regarding church and state.

Isn't that doing little more than interjecting religion into government?

It isn't clever. It isn't smart. It isn't a "gotcha" moment of brilliance.

What it is, is playing along with the right wing trap of mixing religion with government.

The right wing framed the debate...they set the rules for mixing the two...so when anyone attempts to "combat" them by using religion, it just furthers the goal of the right wing theocrats...cause you're still blending religion with government and that's what they want to begin with....

so the debate remains about religion in government by using religion to argue for and against it...

it removes the Constitution and the Separation Clause completely...and the right wing theocrats win.

OK.I'm done.Off my soapbox.

2. But I don't want to turn their Bible around on them
Edited on Wed May-18-05 12:53 PM by Solly Mack
(regarding separation of church and state)I want their Bible out of my government. :)

But it makes no sense to me to argue against the separation of church and state by quoting religious text as an argument...cause it keeps religion in the debate. I think religion should be removed from the debate period. Does that make sense?

And I'm talking about when Christians on the left do it. As a means to combat the right wing fundies...it then just boils down to the exact same religious book being used by both sides to argue for and against the same secular point.

I think secular arguments should be used against the religious arguments. Since we have a secular government and I'm not yielding that point to fundies...America's government is secular.

I'm the grandchild of a Baptist preacher...it's not like I didn't get a dose as a child. I don't mind using their Bible against them on other matters though. :)

7. I know.
But I like to laugh at myself if only to beat everybody else to it!

The news today is awfully depressing. I really don't want to go back out there. I think I'll stay in here for a while.
We don't usually throw pity parties for ourselves but it's warm and dry and safe.

I did wallow a bit last weekend. Between the vivisection threads and the hopelessness I feel when I realize I cannot save the ferals and strays I take care of, it all got to me.

15. Shit, now I know why my ears were burning!
I don't know that I'm an encyclopedia, but I certainly know a LOT more about the bible than I did when I was a Christian. Like many atheists, reading the bible more in-depth helped lead me to atheism.

I think shoving bible verses back at them can be quite effective. If nothing else, it might get a few fence-sitters to actually crack that damn book and READ it rather than accept what someone else tells them is in it.

21. You made a good point, though.
It's sometimes referred to as "trying to out-Jesus the fundies." And you're right, it only further entangles church & state. What's so hard to grasp about keeping one's religion in one's private life? Urgh.

26. ROFLMAO! Good one!!!!!!!!!
I'm for damn sure using that one on a relative of mine!

This is a paraphrase of her telling us about "finding Jesus"

"I just fucking knew it was time and I needed to get my fucking life right with the Lord. I was living in sin and drinking like a fucking fish. I was fucking everyone I could and finally hit rock bottom. Everyone needs the fucking Lord."

Honest!

I love the word fuck but she took it places it's never been before...

We rolled while she was going on at it...thing is, she never ever realized she was using the word fuck repeatedly...or that she was cursing at all. Just on she went "testifying" ....

She even asked us what was so funny...My sister said, "Honey, we're just happy for you is all"

28. Wow, what a coincidence.
I was thinking the same just yesterday. This article prompted it:

------------------------------------

Evangelical college professors protest Bush visit

..."As Christians, we are called to be peacemakers and to initiate war only as a last resort," the ad will say. "We believe your administration has launched an unjust and unjustified war in Iraq."

The 130 signatories, which include 20 staff members, work at Calvin College. Founded in 1876 as a school for pastors of the Christian Reformed Church, it now is one of the nation's flagship schools for a Christian liberal-arts education.

"No single political position should be identified with God's will," says the ad, which also chastises the president for "actions that favor the wealthy of our society and burden the poor."

Christians are to be characterized by love and gentleness, it adds, but "we believe that your administration has fostered intolerance and divisiveness and has often failed to listen to those with whom it disagrees."....

------------------------------

While its nice that they are trying to reclaim their religion from the radical right, by default they must do it by playing the church/state game.
