I just stuck my foot in it...
I dislike debate these days, so why did I respond to a silly NOMA argument???

Just shoot me. Most religionists aren't going to change their minds. They'll just get pissed...AT ME!

Don't think I want to go back in there, though.

5. YIKES!!
That was a total pummel, "completely without merit and completely ridiculous." The individual has a point, though, "Science and religion operate in different spheres. Neither can defeat the other."

There will always be some form of religion because people can make money off of it by influencing large numbers of other people. I agree that it's pretty ridiculous, but merit...well, it's pretty interesting stuff and I can appreciate that religious roots go way back in history, but people back then were clueless compared to today. I'm not judging them; they believed a lot of far out crap because they didn't know how lots of things worked, but American people believing things like that today is um, a little unsettling.

Nice one, but I'd try to be a little gentler on them. It sucks for us because we can't get the obvious through to them, but it's logic versus emotion. When you read their crap, just imagine furry little animals grunting the words out and chewing on little bits of grass and clover. You can maybe see why I just don't bother debating religulouseness with people. I'm tactful until I start communicating :-P

:hi:

That won't surprise anybody.

If I had any hearts left, I'd give you one just for speaking up. I think it IS important for us to let the religiosos know we're out here. I know many people say we shouldn't be "confrontational," but sometimes it seems like EVERY FREAKING THING we say is considered "confrontational." And the other side sees an attack where none was intended. Jeez, I've seen threads where a post simply saying "I'm an atheist" sets somebody off.

I'm also very tired of hearing: "Neither science nor religion can defeat the other."

Science, AFAIK, has never overtly tried to "defeat" religion. Science just does its job.

The same is certainly not true from the other side. From the burning of Giordano Bruno to the burning idiocy of Ben Stein, religion has never stopped attacking science for unintentionally shredding its cherished myths. That goes back at least to ancient Greece, when Anaxagoras said the sun wasn't a god but only a "hot rock."

That battle in ancient Greece ended just like the battles today--with the pious demanding state laws to protect their ALL-POWERFUL gods. Those laws, banning "impiety," were passed just in time to get Socrates executed.

Oh crap, this is turning into another rant. Bye!
