Purely from the standpoint of manipulating people, organized religion has it all figured out.

Create a situation where people, though no fault of their own, are shamed into becoming martyrs for the same fucked up institution that ruined their lives in the first place.

I truly believe that whenever xian or any other religious leaders have this level of control over people's lives, they will be just as brutal and depraved in pursuit of their goals.
