No homework on Wednesdays?
I grew up in a small town of 1200 people. I now live in a town of 50,000+. But both have one thing in common; no homework on Wednesday nights. Because Wednesday night is "church night".

Is this a midwestern thing or do other parts of the country do this too?

4. Don't forget -
You're an elitist too!

Yeah, I was thinking this is just a rural thing from the "good ole days" Another tradition that these hayseeds can't seem to get past.

2. Never heard of such a thing here in the metro Detroit area
Gotta be a bible belt thing.

3. Not in my Bible Belt...
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 05:52 PM by onager
...and that was the South, where it doesn't come any Beltier.

Most of the local churches had "Prayer Meeting" on Wednesday night, but it was always sparsely attended.

This must be just a mid-Western thing. I've never heard of it.

With this in mind, kids should agitate for zero homework on weekends. That would give them more time to concentrate on the Lard's Day.

5. I don't think we even qualify as belt loops here
Although the area I grew up in has some pretty scary shit going on. Lots of Calvinists/Reformed weirdness. And no dancing or board games Baptists. I guess it must be a regional thing.

How about sporting events? Any scheduled on Wednesday?

6. No belt here - but lots of faux piety.
Funny thing is, I'd be surprised if more than 5% of the student population actually attended a Wed eve church event. Ignoring the Church/State issue, it just doesn't seem to make any sense from a statistical standpoint. Why should the entire city pause their studies every week, for a handful of people?

7. When I was a devout Christian at college, I attended chapel on wednesdays.
Back then I was a three-times-a-week type fellow.

8. I'm in the midwest (Minnesota) and we never did that.
Grew up in a fairly small town, too. (~9000 at the time)

But we did have "release time" on Thursdays where everyone got on a bus and got shipped over to their church for a couple of hours for extra indoctrination.

That would be Los Angeles, not Louisiana.

10. Not sure about here, but...
There's about 15 cars in the parking lot across the street right now, and I bet they're in there plotting to take over the school board and teach "Wealth and Prosperity Doctrine" to the lil' kiddles....

11. my ohio experience
The only time I ever experienced anything like that was in high school band, where the director never scheduled rehearsals after 6 on Wednesdays. But that was just his personal thing. And we'd still have rehearsals immediately after school that day.

Why can't the Jesus-worshippers do homework on the night they go to church? If school gets out at 2:30 or 3, that's plenty of time to do both.

No surprise that students from the secular countries finish high school knowing twice what American kids do.

12. Alive and well in central Wisconsin
Back when I was PTO president we weren't allowed to schedule anything on Wednesdays. It wasn't unheard of for the local priests to call and complain.

13. I teach in Central Wisconsin
and it is kind of unwritten here. Certainly no practices can be scheduled on Wed or Sun unless there is a very emergent need. The homework thing isn't enforced but they do recommend that we not have tests on Thursday (I type this as my advanced public speaking class is taking a test, so you know how seriously I weigh that recommendation into other scheduling factors).

15. That sounds like what's going on here in IA
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 10:18 AM by progressoid
I don't think it is enforced here either. Last year, I'd guess my girls may have had only 1 or 2 days of homework on a Wed. Weird.

14. I don't recall this where I grew up
Central NY State.

However, I do remember getting Wednesday afternoons off for church school in grades 3-6. Since so many kids went to church school the teachers would generally just assign free time on Wednesday afternoons. I did the church school thing for 1 and half years until I figured out that the kids who didn't go to church school had way more fun even if they were mostly confined to the classroom. Fun being defined for this young budding proto-geek as getting to read whatever you wanted for however long you wanted and getting to work on unassigned projects of your own choosing. Woo hoo! Science toys! Oh, and impromptu "field trips" to the village library (much better than the school library) with a slight detour by the ice cream store or the deer park on the way back.

16. Wow, with cool stuff like that, I would have fled the church even earlier.
Sadly, in our little town, sometimes going to church was better than being bored to death.

Then I became a teenager and life took on a new twist.

17. Who says? The Church of the Fourth Day Adventists?
IS this an extension of "religion is the opium of the people" - once you've got the junky hooked, you increase the dose of organised religion - the old "six days shall you work" just isn't good enough any more?
