I saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3 this afternoon

And boy does it have a pagan/magical vibe, even more so than the others. Without spoiling the plot too much we get to learn a little more about the history of the pirates and that they paid homage to the sea goddess Calypso (!). We also learn a lot more about the witchy character Tia from the 2nd movie. The pirate mythology aspect is really cool. The idea of the sea as sentient and the themes about the power and fury of the sea being something to be respected...really awesome.

I highly recommend it but would warn that it's a lot darker in tone than the other movies in the series.

1. Thank you for your review. I might go ahead and see it now
that I know there is more to the flick than the awesome Depp, Bloom, and Rush. I like interesting undertones like that.

2. They really played up the fantasy elements in this one

Again not to spoil it too much but there are Big Mythic Themes in this one. Journey to the Underworld, the power of love, fighting against the forces of oppression that would kill the wonder in the world...just awesome, thought provoking stuff in addition to the extremely cool action and comedic aspects.

It really struck me as a Pagan type of movie, which is why I posted about it in here. I've always been more fire-oriented in terms of elemental leanings but man does this movie give you a sense of awe at the sea.

4. I liked it, too, but I'm looking forward to the DVD.
I really need the closed captioning on as trying to make out what Tia is saying is too much like work (medical transcription for many ESL docs).

5. Good review.
It was a good movie, and you are correct that it is 'darker' than the others. It had some great mythological references. It was a very enjoyable movie, though I left feeling a little "eh" because of the ending (which I will not share).
