Weird Places
Once upon a time, my wife and I were driving through Iowa and passed this town named Truro. My mind always goes off into tangents and the name reminded me of this Japanese anime movie (My Neighbor Totoro) so we decided to go back and see if they had a town welcome sign to take my picture in front of. Half a mile off the interstate and halfway to Truro I got this crazy sinking feeling that something was wrong. Maybe I'm just excited to be exploring, and don't say anything to my wife.

We reach Truro and it looks like a nice little town except for this Creepy Small Town Everything Looks Perfect Because It Has Deep Dark Secrets X-files episode kinda way. No offense to anyone living there. Fine, whatever, I've been paranoid for no reason before. They didn't have a welcome sign so we just got gas and left. On the way back this same strong feeling of... I dunno, hurt or pain came back.

We got back on the interstate and everything felt 'normal' again. "That's a weird little town." my wife said. I asked her if she felt something weird on the road going to it at the same time she asked me the same thing. Creepy. That's all there really is to that story. A few years later we brought a couple friends along that road and they picked up on the same vibe without us telling about our experience there. I thought maybe it was some Civil War site or something, but I can't find any history of that place, except it's a normal small town in the middle of nowhere.

Anyone else accidently travel through something they couldn't quite explain?

1. FWIW, a couple tidbits about Truro, Iowa
There were a couple UFO reports there in January 2004.

A google for "Truro Iowa" gets 304,000 hits.
A google for "Truro Iowa weird" gets 32,200 hits.
Seems weird that more than 10% of pages with Truro and Iowa also have weird. I don't think anywhere near 10% of all web pages have weird on them. However, a lot of those are about some other Truro and just mention Iowa in some other context.

I have had the feeling of "Man, I just don't want to be here" for no overt reason, but can't remember where or when.

2. There's a skywalk at Denver International Airport that
plays Native American flute music all the time. No place else in DIA has anything like it; if you hear any music, it's something modern and commercial. I've heard it's because they build that part of the airport on an Indian burial site, and the bridge kept collapsing. They brought in a shaman who suggested the continuous flute music. They haven't had a problem with it since.

I don't know if it's a true story, but walking accross that bridge is a strangely peaceful, almost reverent experience, and I see more people just sitting on the benches there than at any other non-gate area of DIA.

3. Cypress structure, Nimitz freeway, Oakland, CA
There used to be this section of multi-level freeway through Oakland where a bunch of different freeways converge. On the lower level, you drove a fairly long way under the upper level, and it was relatively dark even in daytime and felt enclosed. I've driven on lower levels of other multi-level freeways and none of them ever bothered me. But when I drove or rode through the Cypress structure, it just absolutely gave me the creeps, every time.

The reason that I said in the first paragraph "There used to be this section of multi-level freeway" is that that section collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. 42 of the 66 deaths caused by the earthquake occurred in the Cypress structure when the upper level collapsed, pancaking on top of the lower level and crushed the vehicles on the lower level.
