Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, a Medal of Honor recipient for his service with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II, has become the first member of the Senate to be entered on the Registry of the American Soldier.

The electronic registry is being compiled by the Army Historical Foundation in conjunction with the $200 million fundraising campaign to build a National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Va.

The registry, which eventually could contain millions of names and service histories, can be viewed online. It will be permanently displayed at the museum after it opens in five to six years.

As of mid-January, the names and service histories of 57,000 soldiers and Army veterans were enrolled on the registry, according to retired Col. Dave Fabian, spokesman for the museum campaign.

Fabian said 80 members of the current Congress are eligible for the registry as a result of their service with the Regular Army, National Guard or Army Reserve.
