Your old Uniforms
Those of you who have retired or are no longer serving, what the heck did you do with your uniforms? I retired almost six years ago and I have a closet full of uniforms (which have shrunk by the way.) I have attempted to get rid of them a hundred times but just haven't. They have a spell over me. Any advice on how I can trick myself into freeing up closet space?

1. lol
I tucked mine away in 1990. I moved in 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, and again this past summer. This year I said enough is enough of moving all that crap around and kept one item of each. One fatigue, one dress blue uniform, one cap, etc. It all fits into the GI duffle with room to spare. It's all sentimental as I found too that the damn stuff shrinks when you leave it stowed away.

So, the answer is, pretend you are moving and you'd have to move the crap...

2. Now that you mention it, I really have no idea where my old uniforms went,
or exactly when they left my life. I think an old girlfriend may have done them in to get closet space for herself. In any case, I remember them no longer fitting when I tried to wear them for work around the house.

4. I squatted down at a fire ring at a campsite in the Sierras and split my fatigue pants
Ooops. I grew since I was a teenager.

6. Sold some to a surplus store
Kept one set of fatigues and my dress blues. I never liked the service uniforms so I just sold them.

7. Donated most of it
I donated most of mine to a Salvation Army thrift store, I kept one set of the "old" chocolate chip desert uniforms that I wore during Desert Storm.

Damned if it didn't shrink after I packed it away.;)

8. What A Patchquilt They Could Make
For some talented fingers they could turn those old uniforms into heavy duty blankets for homeless and disabled vets.

10. I kept my utilities, eventually wore them all out, and everything
else except my raincoat and overcoat I donated to a local little theater group that was doing "A Few Good Men".

11. Another great suggestion. Thanks
Surely local schools have wardrobe units that need stuff like that.

12. I still have a few of them
They are REALLY shrunken .... I can't get half of the current me in there.

I have a box of them in the basement. Not a big box. I have one set each of dress and undress blues and whites. I also have my utility jacket (saved mainly for the ship patches that are on it) and one each chambray shirt and dungarees (non-Navy Seafarers). My peacoat long ago got worn out and discarded.

Oh .... and I also have my seabag. It holds an ancient tent that we no longer use and is probably rotted.

I know what you mean, BOSS, and I have a WHOLE lot less invested in my uniforms than you do.

13. I have no clue.
After I got out in 1973, I tossed the stuff. I usta have a 1970 boonie hat, one fatigue top (that shrunk at least two or three times), and a field jacket. I'm down to one 1971 field jacket.

On the plus side of the ledger, I have a bunch of VFP & IVAW t-shirts that I often wear.
