JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — The roommate of a pregnant Marine who has been missing for more than three weeks is being flown home early from military training in California for questioning in the disappearance.

Civilian authorities want to talk to Sgt. Daniel Durham, a roommate of Lance Cpl. Maria Frances Lauterbach, last seen Dec. 14 and possibly within days of giving birth.. The 20-year-old woman may have fled her post at Camp Lejeune, N.C., after lodging and later withdrawing sexual assault allegations against another Marine, fearing charges against her of making a false statements, sources said.

Sheriff Ed Brown of the Onslow County, N.C., Sheriff’s Department said he spoke with Col. Adele Hodges, Camp Lejeune’s base commander, and Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents Wednesday afternoon and asked them to have Durham sent back to Jacksonville for questioning. They agreed.

“When he gets here we will have someone waiting for him,” Brown said. “We do feel like he has some answers.”

Investigators have reason to believe that Lauterbach may have left the area voluntarily, sources said.
