TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Legislature joined a growing chorus of state leaders Monday who oppose the closing of Fort Monmouth.

The Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging reversal of the decision to shut the Army post. The Senate previously passed the resolution.

Fort Monmouth was targeted for shutdown by the federal Base Realignment and Closure commission.

However, costs of shutting the post, which employs 5,500, and moving its operations to Maryland have skyrocketed to $1.5 billion.

Before the vote, Assemblyman Michael Panter of Monmouth County said the decision to close Fort Monmouth was based on faulty accounting.
