KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Neighbors of this sprawling air base shouldn’t be concerned if they hear sirens, small explosions and see smoke coming from the other side of the fence line, base officials said Monday.

Kadena is conducting an operational readiness exercise through Jan. 11, according to an 18th Wing release.

“Placement of training tools, including smoke canisters and ground burst simulators, will be reviewed and approved by senior wing leaders prior to use to minimize impacts on surrounding communities,” the release said

The routine training is held several times a year to “evaluate the wing’s ability to fulfill its missions in support of the U.S.-Japan security alliance,” according to the release. “During the exercise, Kadena Airmen will practice mobilization procedures and conduct training activities to hone technical skills and enhance the wing’s operational readiness.”

Base officials said the training is routine and involves all base units.
