The fledgling Iraqi Air Force now has what is the hallmark of all modern air forces: an air operations center, complete with flat-screen monitors and a general officer coordinating operations across the theater.
The new air operations center reached initial operating capability in late December after receiving the necessary certifications and passing systems checks, said Brig. Gen. Robert Allardice, commander of the Coalition Air Force Transition Team, the American team that advises the Iraqi Air Force.
The new facility is in the Baghdad area, Allardice said.
While the AOC is not as fancy as the Combined Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, he said, it is sophisticated enough to perform all the same command-and-control functions.
“They have the ability to receive live feeds from their ISR platforms,” he said. “They have ... displays around the room, ability to track their forces with blue force tracker. ...
where all their planes are capacity to communicate with them.”
