WHITE HALL, Ark. — The Pine Bluff Arsenal announced Friday it has destroyed the 10,000th rocket filled with nerve gas that had been stored at the chemical weapons depot.
The milestone, reached Thursday evening, came a day after the facility moved beyond the 50 percent mark in its disposal of VX nerve-agent filled rockets.
So far, the arsenal has disposed of more than 100,000 munitions from its work to destroy GB and VX rockets. In May, the arsenal had completed destruction of 480 tons of GB-filled rockets.
Destruction of the VX rockets began Oct. 11, and the operation is expected to take six months. Once the rockets are all destroyed, the facility will be made ready for destroying VX land mines, according to the arsenal.
Prior to chemical weapons disposal operations
the arsenal had for 60-plus years stored 3,850 tons of chemical agent, 12 percent of the Army’s original chemical weapons stockpile.
