A retired Air Force judge advocate is throwing his hat into the ring for U.S. Congress.

Retired Lt. Col. Lance Sigmon, who served 17 years as a JAG officer and three as an enlisted B-52 gunner, announced this week that he is running as a Republican for Congress in western North Carolina’s 10th District.

He will challenge Rep. Patrick McHenry, a one-term Republican incumbent.

Sigmon enlisted in the Air Force in 1977 and served more than three years on a B-52H crew at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., according to his campaign’s Web site.

He left the Air Force in 1981 but rejoined after earning a law degree in 1988, according to the site. He eventually rose to the position of Chief Appellate Counsel for the Air Force and also has served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in Florida and Alaska.
