Schweinfurt couple killed in car crash identified

European edition, Thursday, January 3, 2008

The names of an Army couple killed in a Sunday automobile accident in Germany were released Wednesday.

Killed were Sgt. Justin Spears, 28, and his wife, Vilma Crespo-Spears, 26, of Yuma, Ariz. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt public affairs office.

Also in the car was the Spears’ 8-month-old daughter, Amira, who was airlifted to a German hospital. A spokesperson for the highway police of Bamberg, who responded to the accident, said the infant is doing fine and in the care of American authorities.

The accident occurred on Autobahn 70 near Eltmann when a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old German woman hit the Spears’ vehicle. The woman, who also was killed in the accident, was driving on the wrong side of the highway, police said. An autopsy of the woman could not be performed because the body was burned beyond recognition, the Bamberg highway police said.

Assigned to the 9th Engineer Battalion, Spears recently had returned from a 15-month deployment to Iraq with the 2nd “Dagger” Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
