Future bachelor quarters planned on Juliet Basin

SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — There are now enough beds at Sasebo to bring 41 percent of shipboard E-1s to E-4s ashore under the Homeport Ashore Program, the naval base said Wednesday.

It could be years before all sailors here have a bed on base, but the Navy said it is working to rectify the shortfall.

An increase of 52 beds will help ease the need in the near future and a housing construction project on a base pier could eventually create enough beds for all sailors, according to the base public affairs office.

In July, Sasebo Naval Base had 486 beds for sailors in the Homeport Ashore Program and is now working to increase that number to 538, base spokesman Chuck Howard said in an e-mail response to Stars and Stripes.

Heavy equipment has formed a dirt foundation on the Juliet Basin pier in recent months, but the bachelor quarters likely won’t be finished for several years, Howard said.
