Yokosuka opens 500 more beds for sailors

Sailors and contractors move new furniture into recently renovated single sailor quarters as part of CNFJ’s Homeport Ashore Program. The program is set to have 2,200 beds available by Christmas.

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — The Homeport Ashore Program at Yokosuka will open up another 500 beds for shipboard sailors on Friday.

The move means a total of 2,200 fleet E-1s to E-4s will have a place to live ashore.

“It’s the best Christmas present we could provide for our junior fleet sailors,” Commander, Naval Forces Japan’s Command Master Chief Luis Cruz said Wednesday, noting that only two years ago there weren’t any shore-based living facilities for single fleet sailors.

Dozens of sailors from area commands spent the past week helping prepare the new living quarters, said Petty Officer 1st Class Romualdo Belo, the base’s building manager, who is helping oversee the manpower driving the project. “Our goal is to be ready to have people start moving in this Friday — and we’re going to do it,” Belo said.

USS Kitty Hawk’s Airman Joe Oswald doesn’t know if he is going to get to move ashore, but he is helping out all the same.
