WASHINGTON — The Senate has approved a bill aimed at reining in the Coast Guard’s troubled Deepwater program. The $24 billion program to modernize the agency’s aging fleet has been plagued by cost overruns, design flaws and lax oversight.
The Coast Guard removed Lockheed Martin Corp. and Northrop Grumman Corp. as project managers last spring.
The Senate bill, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell, of Washington, would ensure open competition for similar contracts in the future.
Cantwell called Wednesday’s vote a major step toward securing a strong Coast Guard while ending the waste of taxpayer dollars. She chairs at Senate Commerce Coast Guard subcommittee.
The House approved a similar bill in July.
