As part of the Army’s growth and transformation to a modular organization, six infantry brigade combat teams, two heavy brigade combat teams and 10 combat service support brigades will be formed over the next three years.

The plan, which will re-station one-third of the active Army by the end of fiscal 2011, was approved by the White House on Monday following an Oval Office briefing by Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Dick Cody.

Two each of the new IBCTs will be stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., Fort Stewart, Ga., and Fort Bliss, Texas, and in the coming year, Cody said, the Army will announce whether those will be separate brigades or under the colors and lineage of an existing division.

As planned, the Army will bring two of its brigades home from Germany in keeping with the legal requirements under the base realignment and closure plan, and two heavy brigade combat teams will be built to take their place to comply with theater security cooperation requirements with European Command.

In 2012 and 2013, those heavy brigades will be re-stationed at Fort Bliss and White Sands Missile Range, N.M., Cody said, leaving one Stryker brigade in Germany and one light brigade in Italy as originally planned.
