Schoomaker begins as surgeon general Thursday

Maj. Gen. Eric Schoomaker will hand over responsibility for the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command and Walter Reed Army Medical Center to Maj. Gen. Carla G. Hawley-Bowland in a ceremony Tuesday at Walter Reed in Washington, D.C.

Schoomaker on Thursday will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and sworn in as the 42nd surgeon general of the Army and commander of the Army Medical Command.

He will be sworn in by Gen. Richard Cody, vice chief of staff, in a ceremony that will take place at MedCom headquarters at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Schoomaker took over at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in March and oversaw the start of an overhaul of the Army’s medical system and disability rating system.

He was nominated by the White House on Oct. 1 and confirmed by the Senate on Nov. 30.
