The 8th Fighter Wing at Kunsan Air Force Base, Korea, and the 354th Fighter Wing at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, are swapping some aircraft in an effort to put newer, more capable aircraft on the Korean Peninsula.

Kunsan is receiving a squadron’s worth of newer Block 40 F-16s from Eielson, and Eielson is getting older Block 30 F-16s from Kunsan, said Kunsan spokeswoman Capt. Tiffany Payette.

“The aircraft are being swapped to bring Kunsan’s fleet up-to-date with the latest F-16 upgrades,” Payette said in an e-mail. “These upgrades enhance combat mission readiness and capability.”

The first group of Block 40 aircraft arrived at Kunsan in October, she said, and the swap will be complete after Jan. 1.

The Block 30 aircraft going to Eielson will be used as aggressor aircraft for training, Payette said.
