Report: MRAP maker shuts down plant

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A plant that makes armored military vehicles has shut down and told its employees it will reopen in a few weeks after it merges with another firm and goes through bankruptcy reorganization, according to a report published online Thursday.

Workers at Protected Vehicles Inc. were laid off Monday, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported, attributing the news to workers and others who had contacted the newspaper.

Kevin Harris, a materials handler at the plant, told the newspaper that managers told employees the plant would remain closed for a few weeks and the facility would reopen once the company combines with an unidentified firm and files for bankruptcy protection.

Allan Holmes, an attorney for Protected Vehicles, told The Associated Press the company planned to issue a news release by Friday. He refused to answer any questions about the plant closing.

Protected Vehicles has been sued for unpaid bills in Charleston County civil court at least eight times in the past three months by vendors ranging from a uniform company to a steel supplier. In some of the older suits, the company has denied the claims and asked for a trial.
