Report: Progress on harassment at academies

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — While military service academies have made progress in recent years to create sexual assault and prevention and response programs, academy leaders need to emphasize reporting options for victims, according to a Defense Department report released Friday.

The Pentagon described the report as the first assessment to combine an evaluation of the academies’ new sexual assault prevention and response programs, an evaluation of sexual harassment programs and feedback from cadet and midshipmen focus groups.

The Naval Academy in Annapolis, the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., and the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. were included in the report.

“As the programs mature, leadership needs to sustain their efforts through continued oversight, climate surveys and initiatives to further institutionalize policies, procedures and community collaboration,” the report concluded.

The report covered the academic year from June 1, 2006, to May 31, 2007.
