A Marine pilot escaped the crash of his AV-8B Harrier II jet near Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., with only minor injuries, Marine officials said Wednesday.

It is the second Harrier crash for Marine Attack Squadron 513 in as many years.

The VMA-513 pilot ejected from the aircraft around 10 p.m. Tuesday during a routine training mission over Cactus West training range, about 15 to 20 miles from Wellton, Ariz., according to a Corps statement.

“The aircraft impacted within the confines of the Barry M. Goldwater Range with no collateral damage outside the confines of the military range,” the statement said.

The Harrier belonged to 3rd Marine Air Wing’s Marine Air Group 13, based in Yuma. The incident is under investigation, the Corps said.

It was the first crash of a Harrier in Yuma since 2005, said Capt. Rob Dolan, an air station spokesman.
