NAGOYA, Japan — Two U.S. F/A-18 fighter jets made emergency landings at Nagoya Airport in the town of Toyoyama on Wednesday afternoon, local transport authorities said.

There were no injuries to the crews of the Super Hornets or to any member of the public, the Navy said in a news release.

The airport, serving a limited number of commercial regional flights, closed the runway temporarily to confirm safety after the jets landed at around 3:55 p.m. and six position lights on the runway were damaged, according to the airport office.

The lead aircraft had cockpit warning indications that required the pilots to land the aircraft as soon as possible, the release said. What caused the indications is currently being investigated, it said.

The U.S. fighters, carrying no weapons, were heading to a U.S. Navy air facility in Atsugi after departing earlier the same day from Osan in South Korea, according to the release.

The jets moved to the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force’s Komaki base, adjacent to the government-managed airport, the office said. The ASDF base and the civilian airport share the runway.
