Access to Coleman Barracks ‘smarter’

Thanks to a new Smart Gate being installed at Coleman Barracks, crossing the street will no longer be a one-mile hike.

The gate was installed by the Army to give pedestrian traffic near the chapel the ability to enter the installation at any hour with their military identification cards.

Because of a manpower shift in October 2006, the existing gate was closed at 10 p.m., meaning anyone who wanted to enter Coleman Barracks late at night was forced to walk a mile down the road to enter the installation, according to a U.S. Army Garrison Mannheim news release.

But not just anyone will be able to get into the gate, according to Army officials.

“The Smart Gate ... prevents unauthorized personnel from entering an installation with a lost or stolen ID card,” the release said.

“The equipment uses an Installation Access Control System database to validate authorized entrance.”
