LINCOLN, Neb. — Even in a crowd of veterans on the day before Veterans Day, Logan Veath stuck out as a real life superhero.

“There are two things that are special in America: cowboys and soldiers,” Veath said Saturday at a Big Red Battalion reunion.

Veath is an Army Ranger and is approaching his sixth deployment in as many years, this time to Iraq.

On Saturday before the Nebraska-Kansas State football game, Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., addressed Veath and other alumni of the Big Red Battalion, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s ROTC, at P.O. Pears. He joined about 50 ROTC graduates and their families to celebrate their Husker pride.

Nelson said he likes to get his information on military operations overseas from the “boots on the ground.” For much of his political career, he said, Veath and his family have been a part of that interest group.

Nelson met the Veaths when Logan was a 16-year-old delegate to Cornhusker Boys’ State and challenged the then-governor to come to his hometown and “ride the ridge.”
