FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — A voice rises to vent from the classroom’s last row.

“I’m always the last guy to leave a test,” Sgt. Curtis Crawford tells his professor. “I don’t understand half the questions.”

Crawford calls his enrollment at Hopkinsville Community College’s Fort Campbell campus an attempt to “remap” his brain. While fighting in Iraq, Crawford had more than a dozen improvised explosive devices blow up near him. Now concentration and other mental activities are grueling work.

Crawford’s war wounds were severe enough to keep him from returning to his career as a fire inspector, but he is searching for the will to start over.

“The Army teaches you not to give up,” Crawford said.

One of Crawford’s three classes is designed to build the skills for academic success for wounded soldiers. The second fall term at the Fort Campbell campus offers “Strategies For Academic Success.”
