Casey: Army to add troops faster
Casey: Army to add troops faster

AUSA 2007, WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has green-lighted a proposal to swell the Army by more than 70,000 soldiers by 2010, two years faster than originally ordered by the White House, said Gen. George Casey, Army Chief of Staff.

The original plan called for the additional soldiers to be in place by 2012, but senior military officials concluded that more troops were needed faster.

“Today’s Army is out of balance. We’re currently unable to provide forces as quickly as we would like for other operations,” Casey said Oct. 9 at the Association of the U.S. Army conference in Washington.

The general also said, “We are doing counterinsurgency training at the expense of doing training for other kinds of operations. We are consuming our readiness as fast as we are building it.”

uhc comment: 'swell the Army by more than 70,000 soldiers by 2010'? They're having a hellova time getting enough soldiers for the meat grinder. Stoploss, Reserve and National Guard callups, moral waivers, gangs, repeated deployments, and lowered entry standards have and will continue to take a toll.
