NORTHAMPTON - A 1998 graduate of Smith College died last week while serving in Iraq as a surgeon in the U.S. Army's Medical Corps.

Dr. Roselle Hoffmaster, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, died Friday in Kirkuk, Iraq of a non-combat related cause, according to a statement released from the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. Hoffmaster, 32, was a captain in the unit and served as surgeon in the 1st Brigade Combat Team.

Hoffmaster received a degree in biochemistry from Smith and went on to earn a doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in 2004. After completing her residency in internal medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, she was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in 2004.

Hoffmaster was deployed with her unit to Iraq earlier this month. She was awarded the Army Superior Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Christine White-Ziegler, an associate professor of biology at Smith, remembered Hoffmaster as a very bright and outgoing student.

"She walked the whole Appalachian Trail, something she always wanted to do," said White-Ziegler. "I knew she was going to be an excellent doctor."

The incident that caused Hoffmaster's death is under investigation, according to the Army statement. She is survived by her husband and parents.
