FORT BENNING, Ga. — Midcareer soldiers may have another option for taking a break from the war zone as the Army struggles to hold on to soldiers in which it has invested significant sweat equity.

At the annual Infantry Warfighter Conference here Tuesday, Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Richard Cody laid out some of the initiatives aimed at giving soldiers and their families some breathing space from the suffocating pace of deployments.

One of those, he said, is a plan to reinstate thousands of positions within Training and Doctrine Command.

“We’re putting 8,000 slots back into TRADOC so that captains, majors and some of those sergeants first class will have a place to come back and take a knee,” said Cody on the first full day of this year’s heavily attended conference.

The well-worn themes of the need to train the forces for battle were laid out in a line of presentations that included TRADOC commander Gen. William S. Wallace, Forces Command commander Gen. Charles C. Campbell and the chiefs of infantry and armor, Maj. Gen. Walter Wojdakowski and Maj. Gen. Robert Williams, respectively.

Cody said the Army’s goal is to bring deployments to a 12-months-away, 24-months-home configuration, but there’s no timeline for making that happen.
