WAYNE, W.Va. — The trial of an Army deserter charged with robbing and killing a minister in West Virginia is underway.

Testimony in the trial of 21-year-old Stephen Wilson of Cincinnati started Wednesday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Wilson is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the death of the Rev. Mark McCalla. McCalla was killed June 19, 2008, at a gun range in the Beech Fork Wildlife Management Area in Wayne county.

Co-defendant Daniel Smith of Newport News, Va., was convicted in August and sentenced to life with the chance for parole.

The Army has said Wilson and Smith went absent without leave from Fort Drum, N.Y., in May 2008.
