Marine officials are investigating the death of a North Carolina-based staff noncommissioned officer in Iraq, according to the Defense Department.

Staff Sgt. Stephen L. Murphy, 36, of Jaffery, N.H., died Nov. 8 as a result of a non-hostile incident in Anbar province. He was assigned to 2nd Intelligence Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group out of Camp Lejeune.

Kitrick D. Bradbury told The Keene Sentinel in New Hampshire that his two sons became friends with Murphy when they were teenagers.

“One of our sons, when was home from the Marines, said, ‘How do you like being a soldier?’ and (Murphy) would say, ‘I’m not a soldier. I’m a Marine,’” Bradbury said. “He was very proud of being in the Marine Corps.”

Details about his death have not been released.
