If you’re one of the 39,000 airmen forced to stay in the service under the Defense Department’s stop-loss policy, you’re entitled to retroactive pay — and the Air Force is ready to take your claim.

Active-duty, former and retired airmen will be paid $500 for every month and partial month between Sept. 11, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2009, that they were involuntarily held on active duty because of the policy.

The Air Force used stop-loss to reduce attrition during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and 2002 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

Eligible airmen have until Oct. 21, 2010, to file a claim. They must provide documented proof they were stop-lossed with their claim, according to a Defense Department news release. In cases where an airman does not have proof, the Air Force Personnel Center or Air Reserve Personnel Center will make a decision based on available information.

Legally designated beneficiaries of deceased or incapacitated airmen also are eligible.
