Do I qualify for Medical Benefits
I joined the navy in 1976 and got my honorable discharge in 1981 five years total with a good conduct medal. I have a friend that says I should go, but I never thought I qualified...

1. I would imagine that you do.
I can't imagine why you wouldn't.

This should help you sort it out.

or this

Good luck!

2. no idea, but the DVA has an online application for VA Medical Benefits
You could apply and see if they accept.

3. Did you get a discharge physical?
Do you have any service connected disabilities? If you got a rating of just 0 percent, in California you are eligible for educational benefits for your kids.

5. Try the DVA link above
You don't have to be a disable vet to use their services. They are here to help you fight for your benefits. They are on your side. The VA, may or may not be. See the DVA first.

I filled out the online forms. I printed the completed forms and faxed them to the local VA as per the online instructions. So now I wait.

9. If you meet the means test, you qualify
Any vet qualifies. No need to have served a minimum time and no need for combat time. If your served and got a DD214, you qualify.

The exception is your income. If you make too much you can't get a VA card. I think that's probably a good thing. Let those most in need get it first.

10. here is the means test PDF
http://www.va.gov/healtheligibility/library/pubs/vaincomethresholds/VAIncomeThresholds.pdf

I'm not sure I understand where I fall in all of this...the means test looks a little extreme...looks like you really have to be majorly poverty stricken to qualify...

11. I recieved a letter from the VA
I was approved for medical benefits. The letter informed me that I was designated 8d. I'm not sure what that means, but I think I may have filled out the on line form incorrectly. I have to check on this and will update soon.
