Guard civil engineers to deploy involuntarily
Guard civil engineers to deploy involuntarily

Air National Guard civil engineer squadrons will deploy overseas in historic numbers and scope during the next 24 months, senior Air Guard officials confirmed in a statement Friday.

The mobilizations involve nearly one-eighth of the Air Guard’s civil engineer squadrons and differ from previous deployments because the citizen-airmen aren’t going voluntarily.

"We have large groups being involuntarily mobilized in the beginning and middle of 2009,” said Col. John Elwood of the Air Guard Readiness Center's civil engineer office.

Notices are also coming for 2010, he added.

These new deployments will put more boots on the ground in Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations, Elwood said.
