Karzai welcomes call to reach out to Taliban

KABUL — President Hamid Karzai on Sunday welcomed President Barack Obama’s call to identify moderate elements of the Taliban and encourage them to reconcile with the Afghan government.

Obama’s call “was good news because this has been the stand of the Afghan government,” Karzai told a gymnasium full of Afghan women during a speech to commemorate International Women’s Day.

Obama said in an interview with The New York Times published Sunday that there may be opportunities to reach out to moderates in the Taliban, but the situation in Afghanistan is more complicated than the challenges the American military faced in Iraq.

“There may be some comparable opportunities in Afghanistan and in the Pakistani region,” Obama said, while cautioning that solutions in Afghanistan will be complicated.

U.S. troops were able to persuade Sunni Muslim insurgents in Iraq to cooperate in some instances because they had been alienated by the tactics of al-Qaida terrorists.

1. What is this "moderate elements" theme? There are no moderate elements of that group.

They're fundamentalists who believe that women are property. They're abusers of women and children. There aren't any moderates in that crowd, unless you think that a solid, disfiguring beating is 'better' than outright death.

They don't want to 'reconcile' with the Afghan government. They want to push the Afghan government into a deep gorge, where it will tumble, head over heels, on sharp rocks, and land with a thud at the bottom of the pass and die a horrible death.

They want to BE the Afghan government.

About the only purpose in this exercise is to identify people who identify themselves as Talib, and perhaps find out who their friends are, so they can be "handled" and removed as a threat.

This is either abandonment of women on a massive scale across the country, or carrot and stick. Hold out a carrot, and once they sniff it, we know who they are so we can beat them soundly with a stick.
