Sailor charged with stealing car, hitting cop

Japanese officials have arrested a sailor assigned to the amphibious assault ship Essex after he allegedly stole a car and injured a Japanese policeman in a hit-and-run incident, a Navy official said.

Seaman Apprentice Brandon R. Jackson, 21, allegedly stole a car, drove into the city of Sasebo without a license and struck a Sasebo police officer who tried to question him, said Lt. Cmdr. John Daniels, a Navy spokesman.

The Japanese police officer’s injuries were minor, Daniels said.

The incident allegedly occurred Dec. 7, but Japanese authorities did not identify Jackson as the suspect until Jan. 30, Daniels said.

Jackson was later indicted and taken into custody by Japanese authorities Feb. 5, Daniels said.
