BRUSSELS — Gen. David Petraeus, head of the U.S. Central Command, will meet with top EU and NATO officials Thursday to brief them about the war in Afghanistan, officials said.

Petraeus is on a tour of European capitals in an effort to drum up allied support for the war in Afghanistan and to persuade European Union countries to send more troops there.

President Barack Obama’s administration is considering dispatching an additional 30,000 soldiers to Afghanistan this year in an effort to retake the strategic initiative from the Taliban guerrillas.

Petraeus is the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq and in Afghanistan, where resurgent Taliban are tying down 60,000 U.S. and NATO-led troops and more than 80,000 Afghan soldiers.

The U.S. general will meet Thursday with the North Atlantic Council — NATO’s governing body — and the EU’s Political and Security Committee, two officials said.
