Russia to Modernize Strategic Bombers

MOSCOW -- The Russian Air Force will modernize its fleet of long-range aviation bombers, which, it says, plays an important role in global containment.

"In the future, each component of the Tu-95 bomber will be updated," Russian Air Force Commander-in-Chief Aleksandr Zelin said on Tuesday.

Tu-95 is a "highly economic airplane" equipped with "an intelligent navigational and information support system" and capable of intercontinental flights with nuclear tipped missiles on board, he said.

The Tu-160 strategic missile carrier will also be updated, he said.

"Its modernization is mostly concerned with improving its combat features for attacking with non-nuclear weapons, high-precision weapons, its electronic equipment will be updated, too," he said.
