A sailor who pleaded guilty to conspiring with a Jacksonville, Fla.-based shipmate to beat an Iraqi prisoner will spend 45 days in the brig before leaving the service, the Jacksonville Times-Union reported on its Web site Friday.

According to the report, Petty Officer 2nd Class Thomas Broadway was sentenced to confinement, reduced to the lowest enlisted rank and was given a bad-conduct discharge by the judge Friday at Mayport Naval Station.

But based on the pretrial agreement that led to his guilty plea and the fact that his tour of duty ended in December, the 10-year veteran won’t receive a bad-conduct discharge, the paper reported.

Broadway pleaded guilty to joining with Seaman Trevor Slane of the USS McInerney in punching and kicking a handcuffed Iraqi detainee the men were supposed to be guarding at Camp Bucca, Iraq, according to the Times-Union. The detainee, the men testified, had thrown feces on Slane about 30 minutes before they hauled him out of his cell and beat him.

Slane, a 22-year-old who had been in the Navy a year and a half, was fined and will spend 90 days in the brig following his plea Thursday, the paper noted.
