BOSTON — A former Fort Devens Green Beret convicted of paying someone to kill his wife has sued the Army for $5 million, claiming he never got his final $1,168 military paycheck.
William Tyree Jr., convicted of paying a fellow Green Beret $5,000 to kill his wife in 1979, claims in his lawsuit that he was never “financially discharged” from the Army.
The Sun of Lowell reports that Tyree claims in his suit that by not paying him, the Army “sets a bad example for all other soldiers and morale.”
He is seeking back pay with interest and damages for emotional distress.
Tyree received a life sentence without parole for the Jan. 30, 1979, stabbing death of his wife, Army Pvt. Elaine Tyree. William Tyree was convicted of paying Pvt. Erik Aarhus to kill the woman.
