TUCSON, Ariz. — The first of nearly 600 homes to be built at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson are move-in ready.

The first families were able to walk through the energy-efficient homes this week. Starting at 1,650 square feet with two-car garages, they’re replacing homes built in the 1950s that topped out at 1,000 square feet and had carports.

The housing is being built through a privatization deal where the existing base housing was deeded to a private firm, Actus Lend Lease of Nashville, a subsidiary of Australia-based Lend Lease Corp. Ltd.

Since 2007, Actus has torn down scores of old homes and is in the process of replacing them with 573 homes that are up to 40 percent larger. It develops and finances the homes and uses rent money to pay for upkeep, borrowing costs and profit.

Among the first to tour their new home were Staff Sgt. Roy Dean, 31, his wife Joyce, 26, son Derran, 10, and 2-year-old daughter Nyima. They’re moving from a cramped home with a backed-up toilet to a home with extras like walk-in closets, energy-saving appliances and 2½ sparkling bathrooms.
