If the base grass seems a little higher or the hallway restroom not as clean as it once was, consider the changes another sign of Air Force belt-tightening.

For commanders who set their base’s appearance as a high priority, the new standards may be hard to accept, but they have no choice.

“Admittedly, some of these changes will necessitate a shift in expectations by wing commanders and senior leaders at all levels,” then-Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Duncan McNabb wrote his major command counterparts when he approved the outline for the new standards in spring 2008.

McNabb added that he expects leadership to support the new rules.

“As with all change, support from your level is a prerequisite for successful implementation,” the general’s letter added.
