Air Force Pilot Got Hooked On Space As Child

BALTIMORE — Ever since Terry W. Virts Jr. saw a book on Apollo moon landings in kindergarten, he’s known one thing: “I’d love to go to the moon.”

But, he said, “I realized how unlikely it was.”

He’s getting closer, though.

NASA has chosen the 41-year-old Air Force colonel to pilot the space shuttle Endeavour to the International Space Station. His 11-day mission begins in December 2009 after spending 10 years training with and supporting NASA’s astronauts.

“It’s been a long time waiting to a lifelong goal,” he said.
