Airman Facing Bribery Charges Waits In Guam

An airman who fled to the Philippines to avoid bribery charges in the U.S. is on Guam waiting to be transferred to the states.

A complaint was filed against Sgt. Rommel Schroer Oct. 18, 2006, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, charging him with conspiracy to commit bribery and extortion.

According to an affidavit from Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Adam Radtke, from about January 2002 and continuing at least through or about December 2003, Schroer and other members of the Air Force, other branches of the U.S. military, the Arizona Army National Guard, police officers, corrections officers and employees of various federal departments and agencies agreed to enrich themselves by obtaining money from persons they thought to be narcotics traffickers, but who were in fact FBI special agents.

The defendant and co-conspirators used their official positions to assist and protect and participate in the activities of what they believed to be an illegal drug trafficking organization, the document states. Schroer also offered to transport narcotics for people he thought were drug traffickers.

On Feb. 13, 2003, he and 10 other public officials allegedly transported 30 kilograms of cocaine from Tucson, Ariz., to Phoenix.
