Russian Navy Ships to Visit Nicaragua
Russian Navy Ships to Visit Nicaragua
December 12, 2008
Associated Press

MOSCOW - A Russian navy squadron will visit Nicaragua, the navy said Thursday, a symbolic reward for an old ally as the Kremlin seeks to project its power into Latin America.

Nicaragua is the only country that has followed Russia in recognizing the independence of two separatist regions in Georgia after the Russian-Georgian war in August. Nicaragua was a close ally of Moscow in the 1980s under President Daniel Ortega, who returned to power in 2006.

Navy spokesman Capt. Igor Dygalo said the destroyer Admiral Chabanenko and two support vessels will arrive Friday at the Nicaraguan port of Bluefields for a four-day visit.

The Kremlin has moved to rebuild old alliances with Cuba and Nicaragua and cultivate new friends such as Venezuela - part of efforts to expand Russia's global clout and flex its muscles close to the United States.

The Admiral Chabanenko is part of a Russian squadron visiting Latin America in the first such deployment to the Western Hemisphere since the Cold War. The voyage is widely seen as a reflection of Kremlin annoyance over the U.S. use of warships to deliver aid to Georgia after its war with Russia.

1. Yeah, that's one side of the story--Russia is good and pissed off about the Bushwhacks
arming, funding, training and instigating war against Russian territory. The other side is that the Bushwhacks have been trying to start civil wars in Bolivia, Venezuela and Ecuador, and orchestrated a Colombian bombing and raid on Ecuador's territory earlier this year, almost starting a hot war between Ecuador/Venezuela and the U.S/Colombia. Further, Lula da Silva, president of Brazil, has stated that the Bushwhacks' reconstitution of the U.S. 4th Fleet in the Caribbean is a threat to Brazil's oil reserves, and it is a plain threat to Venezuela's (with its oil region on the Caribbean). In fact, South American leaders have been generally worried about Bushwhack hostilities, and I'd bet that most of them welcome this demonstration of Russian interest in South America, as a warning off to the Bush Junta in its final days in office, and a message to Obama: Hands off South America!
