Ammunition plant goes green

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — On a recent day in Independence, a below-the-radar event occurred that figures to affect the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

An employee inside a huge government factory pushed a “buggy,” a low-riding wheelbarrow filled with thousands of new rifle cartridges, toward an inspection area.

Other employees and visitors crowded around.

The cartridges were made of brass casings assembled with propellant charges and projectiles, or slugs. The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence produces millions of such 5.56 mm cartridges every day for weapons that are carried by U.S. military forces.

But the employees attending this loading operation at Lake City knew these cartridges were different.

...honestly, I wish folk would be more concerned about the economic environment...maybe if they had been, the mess we're in now wouldn't have been as messy...I recall listening to Rush in my shop at the back of the my house...back in May...June...my work radio has seen enough concrete splatter, drywall dust, and SPF sawdust, not to mention being jostled around in the truck...so the best I can do in the shop is a local AM station...noise...and Rush is a real hoot when you're trying to forget that no matter your best efforts, you're only treading water and your late-trailer payment life isn't all you had hoped for...but at the time, I remember Rush going on about some plan that Hillary Clinton had for mortgages...apparently at the time, trouble was seen on the horizon...yeah, you bet, boy howdy!...he was also talking to his ditto-heads, or whatever they are, going out and registering to vote in the Democrat primary...don't recall the goal of that...and haven't heard much since...and haven't had occasion, or the need, to do shop work...'oh God, that men should put an enemy in their mouths, to steal away their brains'...sorry for the ramble...I got distracted...must be something in the water.
