HONOLULU — The Army plans to closely examine but not yet remove hundreds of World War II-era chemical bombs deep in the ocean off Oahu. Officials also plan to test underwater robots to clear conventional weapons from shallower waters near shore.

Army and the University of Hawaii officials will use sonar and mini submarines to determine the condition of munitions in waters off the Waianae Coast that were left there decades ago.

Tad Davis, the Army’s deputy assistant secretary for the environment, says the $7 million operation is the most comprehensive effort the U.S. has ever taken to address munitions dumped in the ocean.

The research is expected to give officials a better picture of the condition and danger of the bombs after so many years in deep water.
